Experimental Docs packaged around themes of Home Movies! Phenomenology! Perception! And More!

Three organizations (Mile Zero Dance, FAVA, and Metro Cinema) are collaborating to present the latest edition of STEM Cell, a celebration of experimental film, video, media art, and dance-on-screen works.

The 2010 festival includes:
  • a live performance by Daniel Barrow of his manual animation, Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry
  • the premiere of Mile Zero Dance's Badlands Project, a dance on screen work made in collaboration by Gerry Morita, Hideo Arai, and David Jeffrey Buchanan
  • five packages of short experimental documentaries, including work by John Greyson and Tom Sherman (both winners of the Bell Award in Video Art), and by local filmmakers Aaron Munson, Trevor Anderson and Ashleigh Brown, among many others.

A media art sculpture will be left in public during the course of the festival; once we know the location, we will announce it via Facebook and our website. There is no guarantee that the work will not be cleaned up, vandalized or removed before audience members get to see it, although we will document it as best as we can.

Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry
Canada 2008, 60 min performance, Written, Illustrated and Performed by Daniel Barrow
    Original Soundtrack by Amy Linton
Awarded the 2008 Images Prize at its premiere, Daniel Barrow's newest "manual animation" combines overhead projection with video, music, and live narration to tell the story of a garbage man with a vision to create an independent phone book chronicling the lives of each person in his city. In the late hours of the night, he sifts through garbage, collecting personal information and then traces pictures of each citizen through the windows of their homes as they sleep. What he doesn't yet realize is that a deranged killer is trailing him, murdering each citizen he includes in his book, thus rendering his cataloging efforts obsolete. The garbageman is a failed artist who fears becoming subject to the grip of something overwhelming. This animation traces his attempts to slow down and creatively reflect, in a process of coming to terms with his own self-loathing and fear.
    Fri, Feb 12 @ 9pm @ Metro Cinema (9828 101A Ave)

Tickets for the performance are $10, or $8 for students, seniors, and members of MZD / FAVA.
